7 Healthy Alternatives to White Sugar

7-Healthy-Alternatives-to-White-Sugar

Refined sugars are not only inflammatory in nature, but are linked to metabolic diseases as well. Sugar has been shown to cause tooth decay, diabetes, weight gain, and even acne. The most inflammatory sugars are those of a refined nature (white sugar and brown sugar). Their processing depletes any nutritional value while increasing inflammation.. The sugar substitutes are just as bad if not worse. They are not only inflammatory in nature but have been linked to disease in the body. Aspartame is linked to headache, nausea, dizziness, and is thought to precipitate and/or worsen conditions like multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions. Saccharin (otherwise known as Sweet'N Low®) has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. With the health risks of traditionally made sugar it’s nice to know that there are some alternatives out there that are less inflammatory and lower on the glycemic index. Here are 6 of my favorites:

Spiralized Vegetable Soup

Spiralized-Vegetable-Soup-1

When it comes to spiralizing vegetables zucchini are a great choice – they make a tasty and pretty alternative to ordinary pasta. In this recipe I decided to spiralize a few other vegetables for extra flavor, color and texture – carrot, potato and celery root. This soup is different from other soup recipes not only because it is made almost exclusively with spiralized vegetables (with the exception of the onion) but also because it cooks in only about 10 minutes. Spiralized vegetables cook very quickly so all you need to do is briefly fry them with the oil and the spices and once the hot water is added bring the soup to a boil and then simmer for only a few minutes. This is sufficient time for all the flavors to come together in a delicious broth while the vegetables remain firm (but aren’t raw). This veggie noodle soup is almost as convenient as instant noodles, but so much healthier and tastier! Enjoy!!

5 Fruits That Will Actually Improve Your Mood

5-Fruits-That-Will-Actually-Improve-Your-Mood

This week, we're spotlighting a guest post by the wonderful Abbey Smith. Enjoy!!

Fruit is very good for your physical and mental health. Everyday Health suggests that eating fruits (and vegetables) significantly lowers your risk of depression.

The Everyday Health article, citing recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), suggests eating a variety of fruits stating that you should eat 1½ to 2 cups worth per day.

Additionally, a Health IQ article cites a seven-year study by the American Public Health Association in which people who ate more fruits (and vegetables) reported a boost in positive emotions and life satisfaction. Notably, the reported change in happiness and satisfaction was akin to “moving from being unemployed (not by choice) to happily employed.”

While fruits in general can help improve your mood, certain fruits have proven to be better mood enhancers than the rest. Here are five fruits that will improve your mood.

14 Foods That Will Help Slow the Aging Process

14-Foods-That-Will-Help-Slow-the-Aging-Process

Why is there such an emphasis on fruits and vegetables when talking about healthy nutrition? What is all the fuss? Research has proven many health and healing benefits of different nutrient components of fruits from beta carotene in carrots to sulphurane in broccoli and sprouts. There are many chemical compounds that work with the cells inside of the body to both regulate and stop abnormal cell growth. In addition, vegetables contain immune boosting and anti-oxidant value which help to remove damaged cells that may cause inflammation that promotes premature aging, as well as chronic disease. After looking at several resources, we have come up with our top 10 list for vegetables to help slow the aging process and prevent diseases such as hypertention, diabetes, high cholesterol, and even cancer as well.
