Exercise can seem like a chore, but that generally is about our perception of what exercise has to look like. If we see exercise as a chore or something that “has to be done” then it just becomes work. However, if we see it as an opportunity to get out and do something fun and active, it could be a whole different story.
One of the things that can help make fitness more fun is to get a fitness buddy. Having a buddy is like having an accountability partner. This person will keep you accountable for your goals, but also it’s a person to make exercise more fun and exciting to do. When you have someone sharing the energy of the workout, it really makes it less of a burden and more of a social opportunity. Here are five ways to make exercise fun with a fitness buddy.
Take a Hike
Walking or even hiking is a great way to get active and adventurous in a fun way. Create a little competition with healthy rewards. Create interval training games during the hike along the way to make it more interesting and challenging. Find different places to explore to keep variety. These are all the ways to get a good workout in by simply using your legs and nature as your obstacle course.
Whether you are new to rollerblading or a veteran, this is a great way to try something new and adventurous with a buddy. Rollerblading is great cardio and is a full body workout. At a moderate pace you can burn over 500 calories in one session, and once you are proficient, you can burn up to 1000 calories in an hour of blading. Take on a park or a short trail to start, then make your way up to longer trails and even rollerblading 1/2 marathons!
Biking is another great outside activity that burns plenty of calories. You can choose road biking if you want a smooth ride, or mountain biking for a more rugged experience. Whichever the case, create a challenging route with your buddy and make it a little fun competition. Then reward yourself at the end with a nice smoothie (winner treats all)!
Obstacle courses are becoming more and more popular these days and why not? Obstacle courses not only give a sense of challenge and variety, but also create a sense of accomplishment when finished. Find an obstacle course in your area and get up to the challenge!
Take a Run (5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon)
This is a great way to really create a challenge for yourself, and keep yourself accountable is to sign up for a 5K, or 10K race. You could even take it a step further and sign up for a 1/2 marathon. You can create a whole game out of the training for such a race, and create a team that supports you in this feat. In addition, you can run for a charity organization that matters to you; you’d be geting fit and make a difference in the process. Take your accountability to the next level and sign up for a 5K or 10K run this year.
