Today we’re going to do a great alkaline juicing recipe. I want to talk a little bit about juicing and how easy it actually is. Some people thing juicing can be very complicated, but you don’t need a gazillion ingredients. You can use four or five ingredients. You can even use one or two. This is one of my favorite recipes, and it’s easy to make.
I use an Omega 8000 and it’s called a masticating juicer. Now there are a couple types of juicers. There’s a centrifugal juicer, which I believe Jack LaLanne’s is that type. So a lot of people are familiar with that. It’s the kind that sits up and it has a basket that fits into the juicer. It spins really fast, and you put the ingredients in there and it spins the juice out that way. That’s called a centrifugal juicer.
This is a masticating juicer, and the big difference is that instead of spinning the vegetables and fruits through the juicer, it actually presses the juice out of the fruits and vegetables. This is important because when you’re taking a slower process to grind and press the juices out, you preserve the nutrients as opposed to the centrifugal juicers which tend to warm the juices because of the horsepower of the machine itself. That tends to take away from some of the nutrients. So that’s the difference between those two different types of juicers.
What we’re going to do is make a kale, carrot, celery, apple, cucumber, and ginger juice. I know that seems like a lot of ingredients. You could just do an apple, cucumber, and carrot juice. Or you could just do a kale, celery, and carrot juice. You could take any combination of these, but I like the combination of all of them because they all have different health properties not only for the entire system, but for each different organ system.
Kale is really great for purifying the blood. Apples and carrots are very good for the digestive system. They’re a great source of fiber. Even though we’re going to be taking some of the fiber out by masticating the apple there will still be some of that left. Ginger is great for the immune system, and it’s a great tonic. And then you have refreshing cucumber. Cucumber is very hydrating and refreshing. What are some other properties that you know of for cucumbers? That’s really the only one that I can think of.
It’s a great detox and great for cleansing. It’s very nutrient dense and it will help support your digestive system.
Yes, yes. And then you have celery, which is actually a natural diuretic, so it’s really great for cleansing the kidneys and the liver as well. And so we have all of these here. And of course we can’t forget the carrots. Carrots are really great for beta-carotene and for eyesight. But they’re also really great for the digestive system as well.
One of the things I really love about using apples, carrots, and ginger in the juicing recipe in particular is that they bring that sweetness. I personally have a sweet tooth, so it can be a little strong for me to have a juice without any sweetness at all. Although I do like it if it’s very refreshing like the alkaline recipe that Dr. Kat did recently that had avocados, parsley, garlic, and a lot of other wonderful things. But I like a little sweetness in my juice, so I use things like pears, apples, and carrots to sort of break up that strong taste of the kale—or sometimes I use spinach—and of the celery, which can be very overpowering to the palate.
I’ve already cut a few of these apples, but I’m going to show you this wonderful apple corer. It makes it so easy to cut these apples. A lot of times it seems like that’s the most time-consuming part. You put the corer right over the center of the apple and then apply a little pressure. I take the core out so the seeds don’t get processed. Very convenient.
All of these vegetables are organic, and I did pre-wash them with this all natural veggie wash. The only ingredients are water and natural cleaners made from corn, palm, and coconut, citrus oil, and the natural derivative of citrus fruit, glycerin, and grapefruit seed extract. Grapefruit seed extract, as you know, is a natural antibiotic. The rest of them dissolve the bacteria, and the oils, and the dirt and things like that. You just spray it on, let it soak for a few minutes, and then rinse them off. You might also want to scrub with a toothbrush really well.
So let’s go ahead and start our juicing. After feeding all the ingredients in the juicer, you need to make sure all the juices are mixed well. That just looks loaded with vitamins and nutrients. I love the consistency; it’s just like water.
So there you have it. This is how to make a wonderful dark green juice that you can drink every single day that actually tastes very, very good.
