The Importance of Symptoms of Estrogen & Progesterone Deficiency

Estrogen and progesterone are two of the most important hormones in a woman's body. They are considered steroid hormones, and influence things like metabolism, immune functions, the menstrual cycle and sexual functions. When estrogen, progesterone or both of these hormones are not being naturally produced in sufficient quantities it can cause a variety of problems.

Estrogen is responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle and keeping things like bones, blood vessels, the heart and even hair production nice and healthy. When your body is not producing enough estrogen it can result in many symptoms, some which come on almost immediately and others that develop over time. The following are a few common things to watch out for when you are worried about low estrogen:

  • Hot flashes
  • Headaches and/or migraines
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Forgetfulness

The hormone progesterone is manufactured when a women ovulates, and triggers changes to the lining of the uterus in preparation for an implanted egg. This hormone is also responsible for the changes and maintenance of the uterus throughout pregnancy. Women who have low levels of progesterone may experience symptoms including:

  • Infertility
  • Severe Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Depression
  • Heavy menstrual cycle
  • Fatigue
  • Forgetfulness
  • Insomnia or restless sleep

The fact that many of the symptoms of low levels of these two hormones are quite similar makes it possible to get a misdiagnosis if the levels of only one of these hormones are tested. This is why when experiencing any of the above listed symptoms you should have tests to identify the levels of both estrogen and progesterone. Studies have shown that estrogen deficiency can make other medical problems more serious as well. Restoring a healthy balance of both of these critical hormones can quickly provide relief of the symptoms and help to improve long term health as well.
