Should I be Concerned About Systolic Hypertension?

That's a loaded question! You should be concerned but that should not effect your activity as long as your blood pressure is controlled. Here are the things that you should be concerned about.

You should be concerned what your blood pressure is on a day-to-day basis. My recommendation is to have a home blood pressure cuff for yourself. Check your blood pressure, at first, on a daily basis. When you know that you are well controlled, then on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to make sure that you are maintaining that control. As long as you are maintaining control of your blood pressure, being very active is not a problem. In fact, it is actually healthy for you to keep your blood pressure lower and your heart rate healthy. So when I say, "be concerned," I don't mean be worried but I do mean be proactive and aware of where you are with your blood pressure.

The second thing I would be concerned about, or aware of, is your diet. You know I will mention diet in every "Ask the Doctor" segment. You want to be careful of high salt, high fat, dietary type things. You also want to be careful of pork because it contains a whole lots of salt, as well. I recommend cooking your food as much as possible. When you go out to eat, you don't know how much salt they are putting in your food, so it's possible to get a higher salt content than you realize.

The third thing is to stay hydrated. When you stay hydrated, then that allows the body's cells to act as they are meant to work. I recommend 1-2 liters of water a day depending on your activity level and body weight. General guidelines are to convert your weight (in pounds) to kilograms, and that is how much water you should drink.

Quick example: If you are 200 lbs, then you weigh apx. 91 kg. Therefore, you should drink about 3/4 of a gallons of water daily.

Next, you want to look at your stress levels, as stress can cause resistance in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Are you in a high stress corporate environment? In a high stress relationship or family? You want to learn how to either eliminate the stressor or manage the stress itself. My recommendation is to remove the stressor if it's possible, but most people aren't going to jump ship from their job, or disown their parents, children or spouses.

If you blood pressure is NOT being maintained by whatever methods you are using, visit your physician or holistic professional, and so what needs to be done to have your blood pressure come back to normal. When your blood pressure continues to be maintained at a higher level, you are causing more work for your heart to do and eventually your heart will get tired.

If you can imagine going to the gym to lift weights, you build muscle. With the arms and the legs, that might be great. But with the heart, you don't want to build and bulk up the heart muscle because that decreases the ability for it to relax and receive blood. So the higher the systolic blood pressure rate is, the more resistance your heart is pushing against in order to push the blood to your vital organs, brain and limbs of the body. So you don't want to have blood pressure levels over 140:90 for long periods of time. Hence why having the blood pressure cuff is important.

At the end of the day, the bottom line is:

Is your blood pressure being maintained at a normal level? Buy a cuff to make sure it is being maintained at a normal level Continue to be active as long as your blood pressure is being maintained at a normal level Watch your diet
