Why Testosterone is So Important in Women


When people hear the word testosterone they typically think only of its importance in men. While men produce much more of it than women, it is essential for the health both sexes. Women with low testosterone often experience several potentially serious medical problems. One of the dangers of low-testosterone in women is that the symptoms are often believed to just be part of natural aging so they are ignored.

Testosterone in women is primarily responsible for maintaining the physical, mental and sexual health throughout life. It stimulates hair growth, and triggers the development of bone, muscle and skin. It is also a major factor in regulating mood, and when in proper balance will help ensure a general sense of happiness and well-being. The sexual interest (libido) and arousal are also heavily influenced by this critical hormone.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms make sure to have your hormone levels checked by a qualified doctor to ensure it isn't something serious:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loss of muscle strength and mass
  • Vaginal dryness or painful sexual intercourse
  • Sudden absence of menstruation
  • The inability to have an orgasm
  • Depression

These are just a few of the more common symptoms to watch out for. Seeing a doctor and considering whether or not hormone replacement therapy is right for you is a great first step. A recent study by Massachusetts General Hospital suggests that low dose testosterone therapy can improve depression and other symptoms for many women.
